Stress and pain are nearly unavoidable in our modern lives: 24/7 news broadcast, constant connectivity through cell phones and social media, traffic, financial and work pressures, health issues and family concerns often leave us feeling irritable, overwhelmed, and burntout. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an integrative mind/body approach designed at the UMass Medical Center in 1979 to reduce stress, anxiety, depression, fatigue, pain, high blood pressure, and many other symptoms. MBSR helps improve emotional wellbeing, and help create greater energy and enthusiasm for life. Three decades of scientific research suggest that training in MBSR can positively affect participant’s ability to reduce medical symptoms and psychological distress while learning to live life more fully. This eight-week experiential program focuses on using contemplative techniques in a safe, supportive, and deeply engaging learning environment to help you reduce stress and improve your emotional awareness, concentration, and responsiveness, and approach life from a perspective of curiosity, openness, awareness, and kindness. Participants will learn and be guided in mindfulness meditation practices, very gentle stretching and body movement, and engage in group dialogue and mindful communication exercises. Weekly home-practice will be encouraged to assist you in integrating mindfulness into your everyday life. Students will be provided with a workbook and a CD containing guided home practices. This program will be held at the Heathcote Botanical Gardens Bonsai Pavilion. Come experience rest and relaxation in a wonderful and inspiring natural outdoor setting. This program will be held on Mondays when the Gardens are closed, allowing for added quietness and solitude. In addition to guided mindfulness practices and gentle yoga in the Pavilion, we will be practicing walking meditation in the Bonsai Garden. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes, and bring a yoga mat or exercise cushion for the yoga segments. This program requires no prior experience and is suitable for seniors and persons with disabilities. Program conducted by Robert Anderson, MSW. A clinical social worker and experienced group leader. Robert trained in the classic MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) model based on the esteemed Jon-Kabat Zinn, PhD. under Micki Fine, M Ed, of Houston’s Mindful Living organization in 2001, and recently with Susan Kaiser- Greenland, author of The Mindful Child, and Inner Kids.com. The father of four boys, Robert has been a long time meditator and instructor. Robert can be reached at 772 631 0763 or mbsr1@ymail.com. |
