Heathcote Botanical Gardens is located in the beautiful and historic city of Fort Pierce, Florida (also know as the Sunrise City) in St. Lucie County on the historically rich Treasure Coast area of Florida. Along with being the home of Heathcote Botanical Gardens, Fort Pierce offers sites of historical significance and historic preservation efforts; miles of undeveloped beaches; excellent fishing and boating opportunities; assorted museums; several well known research organizations; along with an unpretentious essence and a community redevelopment effort that is making this city very attractive to visitors and future residents alike. Fort Pierce is situated on the west shore of the Indian River Lagoon, which is also part of the Intracoastal Waterway. An inlet provides boat access to the Atlantic Ocean from the Intracoastal Waterway and separates North and South Hutchinson Islands. The city of Fort Pierce is separated from the ocean by the Intracoastal and the barrier islands. Arched bridges that cross the Indian River Lagoon, link Fort Pierce to both North and South Hutchinson Islands. From downtown Fort Pierce, it takes approximately 10 minutes to get to the Garden and 5-10 minutes to get to the south barrier island beaches.
