Hypertufa Workshop

Creating Serene Spaces

The Art of Hypertufa

Join Dr. Kendra Brown, Saturday, January 27, 2018 and learn how to create original art for your garden.

Hypertufa pots, with their rustic appearance, are uniquely suited to complement your garden, patio or porch. Made of cement, peat moss and perlite, they are both durable and light weight. In addition to being kind to plants, hypertufa pots create a serene environment ideal for Fairy Gardens, Meditation Gardens or easy Bonsais (all featured in this class).

Dr. Kendra Brown and her associate, Joyce D’Agata, have enjoyed the many positive responses to their previous hypertufa classes and are excited about teaching this new variation.

You will receive:

Wear gardening clothes, as this can be messy. Bring rubber gloves and a dust mask (Home Depot or Lowes). All other materials will be provided.

$45 members; $55 non-members.

Bonsai Repotting Workshop

Bonsai Repotting Workshop

Bonsai need to be regularly repotted, especially younger bonsai (under 10 yrs. old) due to various factors: their pots become root bound; soil runs out of nutrients and imbalances of salt and Ph levels occur etc. Repotting will help to correct this and enable the bonsai to reach its full potential with fresh growing medium and pruning overgrown or excessive roots.

Apart from watering, repotting is probably one of the most important and misunderstood processes. It is also a good time to thin your plant’s foliage mass to help reduce the stress on the bonsai.

Heathcote’s bonsai curator Seth Nelson will show you when you should repot, how to repot, what you need to repot your bonsai, and much more.

Feel free to bring your own tree and a pot that you’d like to work with and learn step-by-step as you go.

Saturday, September 30th: 10 AM – 11:30 AM

Class #1: Growing Your Own Pineapples!

Robert Pike

Robert Pike

Our first class is lead by Heathcote member, volunteer and retired science teacher Robert H. Pike. You and your kids will be inspired and educated in the cultivation of pineapples at your own home.

Of all the fruits and vegetables Robert has grown, pineapples have been the easiest and most rewarding for him. He’s grown tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, and many annuals and perennials. He’s had Mango, Orange, and Key Lime trees on his property, and has grown many herbs; but nothing has been easier than the pineapple. He says they don’t need much water or attention but they do need patience – they take 18 months to two years or more to come to fruit.

Come and learn about the interesting history of South Florida Pineapples and “plant” your own pineapple on Saturday, June 10th at 10:00am.
